How to Compress Video Files Without Losing Quality

Video files can be huge, making them difficult to share or upload. In this guide, we'll explore how to compress videos directly in your browser using Local Media Tools.

All processing happens locally in your browser. Your video files never leave your device.

Why Compress Locally?

Most online converters upload your video to a server. This has several downsides:

  • Privacy Risk: Your personal videos are sent to unknown servers.
  • Data Usage: Uploading large files consumes bandwidth.
  • Speed: Waiting for uploads and downloads takes time.

Our tool uses FFmpeg.wasm to process videos right on your device. No data leaves your computer.

For best results, use MP4 (H.264) as your output format — it offers the best compatibility across devices and platforms.

Steps to Compress

  1. 1
    Open the Video Compressor

Navigate to the Video Compressor tool from the homepage or the tools menu.

  2. 2
    Upload Your Video

Drag and drop your video file into the dropzone, or click to select a file. MP4, MOV, and MKV are supported.

  3. 3
    Choose Compression Settings

Select your desired quality level. Lower quality means smaller file size but more visible compression artifacts.

  4. 4
    Compress and Download

Click Compress and wait for processing to complete. Then download your compressed video.

Understanding Compression Settings

  • CRF (Constant Rate Factor): This determines the quality/size balance. Lower values mean better quality but larger files.
  • Preset: 'Ultrafast' is quick but produces larger files. 'Veryslow' produces the smallest files but takes longer.

Very aggressive compression (high CRF values) can cause visible quality loss, especially in fast-moving scenes or dark areas.
